Platform & IP

One chemistry. More than one product.

IOTHANE's platform holds iodine in medical polyurethane and releases it slowly, at a level that acts on bacteria and biofilm while sparing healing tissue. The wound dressing is the first product; the same chemistry applies wherever polyurethane touches the body.

The platform

What makes it a platform.

Iodine held in polyurethane

Iodine complexes with medical-grade polyurethane, so the material itself becomes the reservoir.

Released in the window

Slow, sustained release keeps tissue in the iodine window: active against bacteria, biofilm, viruses and fungi, below the level that harms healing cells.

Made on standard lines

Commercial polyurethane, USP iodine and one added processing step, so new formats build on existing manufacturing.

LEAD · MANUFACTURED
IothaFoam™ dressing

Iodinated foam wound dressing for burns, trauma, surgical and chronic wounds. 510(k) filing planned for Q2 2027.

NEXT
More sizes and formats

Additional dressing sizes and shapes on the same line and process.

IN DEVELOPMENT
Iodinated catheter

A sustained-iodine urinary catheter aimed at catheter-associated urinary tract infections.

DESIGN INTENT
Graft-compatible

Designed for skin-graft and cell-therapy workflows where silver sulfadiazine is excluded.

Pipeline products other than IothaFoam are early-stage. Cell-therapy compatibility is a design intent, not a tested claim.
Intellectual property

Patent pending.

IOTHANE Medical owns a published U.S. patent application covering the iodine-window dressing, and continues to build its portfolio around the platform.

Research lineage

Four decades of iodine–polyurethane invention.

Harry H. LeVeen, MD, and his sons Eric and Robert LeVeen patented iodine–polyurethane materials for antibacterial use, sterilization and other applications beginning in the 1980s, and published the science of self-sterilizing polyurethane–iodine plastics in 1993. IothaFoam is the modern, wound-care expression of that work.

Best known for
The LeVeen shunt
Harry H. LeVeen, MD, invented the LeVeen peritoneovenous shunt, an FDA Class II surgical implant used worldwide since the 1970s to treat refractory ascites. Eric LeVeen began his device-development career working with his father on the shunt. IothaFoam carries that surgeon-inventor tradition forward.
